
Aerial Imagery on a Live Construction Site
A construction project always has more people with a stake in it than it has people who can stand on the site. The client’s board, the funder, the design team, the incoming tenant, the planning officer, the neighbours who have already been written to twice. Each of them builds a picture of the job from whatever reaches them, and what usually reaches them is a written report and a handful of photographs taken at head height from wherever somebody happened to be standing.
An aerial record does something a walk round cannot. It shows the whole site at once, in one frame, with the boundary, the compound, the access, the neighbouring buildings and the work itself all in the same picture and all in the correct relationship to each other. Somebody who has never set foot on the plot can look at it and understand where things are. That is a smaller claim than measurement and a more useful one day to day, because most of the questions a project generates are questions about arrangement rather than dimension.
This piece is about that use of aerial imagery, and about the part people underestimate, which is that a construction site is a live workplace with people working beneath the aircraft, and the flight has to be designed around that from the outset.

Arrangement, Not Dimension
What an aerial frame settles that a ground photograph cannot


Most of what a project argues about is arrangement. Where the crane sits relative to the boundary. Whether the compound is blocking the access the delivery schedule assumes. How close the excavation has come to the neighbouring wall. Which face of the building the scaffold is on this month. These are not measurements, they are relationships, and a photograph taken from ground level can only ever show one of them at a time.
One frame, and everything in it at once
From above, those relationships are visible together and in the right proportions to each other. A single frame carries the boundary, the compound, the access route, the plant, the works and the surrounding properties, and anybody looking at it can see how they sit. A folder of ground-level photographs, by contrast, asks the viewer to assemble the site in their head, and people assemble it differently depending on what they already believe. That is why an aerial image tends to end an argument that a ground-level photograph prolongs.
Something that can simply be sent
It is also far easier to circulate. One image in an email reaches a funder, a design team and a planning officer in the same form, and none of them has to be talked through it on a call first. The value here is comprehension rather than record keeping. Where a project needs measurable output that can be compared visit to visit, that is a different product with a different specification, and it is covered on the site mapping page.

Flying Over a Working Site
A construction site is not an empty field with a building in it. It is a workplace with people in it, and that single fact shapes the whole operation, because a flight is never planned to pass over people who are not part of it. Airspace permissions are a separate question, settled well before the date is agreed.
Nobody is flown over without knowing about it
A person counts as part of the operation only when a real set of conditions is met. They have to have agreed to it, and to have been given clear instructions and the safety precautions to follow if the aircraft does something unplanned. They have to broadly understand the risk, and they have to be free to decline without being shut out of their own working day. Understanding is checked by asking, not assumed from a notice on a gate. On a construction site all of that is a briefing, and only the site manager can deliver it, which is why the flight is planned with the site rather than around it.
What the separations mean on a tight plot
Where people are not part of the operation, separation distances apply, and on an urban plot they decide what can be flown at all: fifty metres in flight, and thirty metres for take-off and landing. The take-off point is cordoned to a level chosen from the risk assessment, ranging from signage alone, through cones and signage, up to a continuous physical barrier with a crew member stationed at it. Existing hoarding often does that job better than anything brought in, one of the few respects in which a construction site is easier than open ground.
The site makes its own weather
Large structures generate conditions a regional forecast will never show. Wind shear and curl-over around buildings, gusts over hot hardstanding and the exhaust from ventilation plant all sit inside the flight envelope, not outside it. Wind is measured on site rather than taken on trust, and the work moves to the calmer end of the day where the programme allows.
What the Record Is, and What It Is Not
An aerial image of a construction site is a visual record. It shows what was visible from the air on the day it was flown, and that is a genuinely useful thing for a project to hold. It is worth being equally clear about where it stops.
A visual record, not an assessment
It is not a building survey, it is not a structural assessment, and it does not grade the condition of anything. Where something in the imagery looks like it warrants attention, the honest description is an area warranting further investigation by a suitably qualified contractor, and that is how it gets written up. Nor is it a measurement product. An image straight out of a camera carries no scale, so asking it a question about distance or volume is asking the wrong thing of it. Where a project genuinely needs measurable output, that is a separate specification with flight planning, ground control and a processing route decided in advance. What the view from above cannot reach
The coverage is bounded too. An aerial view is excellent on layout, sequence and anything with sky above it, and close to useless on anything under a completed roof, inside a structure, behind a facade or below ground, which on a build past the frame stage can be most of the work. So the aerial record is one input alongside the site’s own reporting rather than a replacement for it, and the sensible time to agree what it needs to show is before the flight rather than after. A record quietly treated as more than it is causes far more trouble than one whose limits were stated at the outset.
