
The Images Outlive the Inspection
An inspection happens on one morning. The images it produces are usually needed on some other day entirely, by somebody who was not standing there and cannot ask what they are looking at.
That gap is where most photographic records quietly fail. On the day, a set of aerial photographs looks impressive, and everybody nods. Four months later a managing agent is trying to work out whether the cracked flashing in one of the images is the same one the roofer has just quoted for, or a different one on the other side of the building. Nobody can tell, so the whole exercise gets repeated.
The photographs that survive that test are not the dramatic ones. They are the ones that carry their own context: an observation marked where it actually sits, a wider frame that places it on the building, and coverage complete enough that nothing found later can be waved away as something the camera simply missed.
Drone Media Imaging is a commercial photography business that flies, and this is the part of the job that decides whether the flight was worth paying for. The pictures are not the deliverable. The record is, and a record is judged by whether somebody else can act on it without you in the room.

The images are read by people who were not there
Almost nobody who has to act on an inspection photograph was present when it was taken. A roofer pricing the work, a managing agent deciding whether it goes in this year’s budget, an insurer assessing a claim, a solicitor’s client before exchange: all of them are looking at a flat image of a building they may never have stood next to, trying to work out what it shows and where on the roof it is.
That is a harder task than it sounds. Roofs are repetitive. One slope of grey slate looks much like another, and a photograph taken close enough to show a genuine defect is, by definition, too close to show where that defect sits. Both frames are necessary and neither works alone.
And they are read long after the flight
The second thing that happens to inspection imagery is that it waits. It gets forwarded, filed, attached to an email, and opened again when something else prompts it, often a long time later and often by somebody new to the problem. A leak comes back. A lease ends. A quote arrives that seems high and needs testing against what was actually up there.
At that point the images are being asked to do something they were never explicitly commissioned for. They are being used as a record. Whether they can carry that weight was decided months earlier, in how they were framed, marked and organised, and by then it is far too late to change.

What Makes One Image Findable and Another Just Nice to Look At
The observation is marked where it sits
An annotation is not decoration. Marking the lifted flashing directly on the photograph turns an image that requires explanation into one that does not, and it removes the most common failure in this whole process: the recipient looking at the right picture and still not seeing the thing.
Every close frame has a wider one behind it
A detail shot answers what. A wider frame answers where. Photographed as a pair, a split in a membrane can be placed on a specific roof area rather than somewhere on a large flat expanse, which is the difference between a roofer quoting confidently and a roofer adding contingency for the unknown.
Coverage is systematic, so absence means something
Where a roof is covered slope by slope rather than opportunistically, the set acquires a property that scattered photography never has: you can trust what is not in it. If a slope was photographed and nothing was marked, that is information. If the coverage was ad hoc, an unmarked area proves nothing at all, and the record cannot be used to argue anything later.
The set is ordered so a detail can be found again
Images that arrive in a sensible sequence, grouped by elevation or by slope, can be navigated by somebody who has never seen the building. Images that arrive as an undifferentiated pile cannot, however good each one is individually. The first is a record. The second is a folder of photographs, and the difference only shows up on the day somebody needs to find one specific thing in a hurry.
What the Record Settles, and What It Cannot
The uses that only a durable record supports
Photographed the same way a year apart, two sets become a comparison, and a comparison is a far stronger basis for a maintenance budget than anybody’s recollection. Dated imagery also does work in a dispute, whether that is an insurer asking whether damage predates a storm or a landlord and tenant disagreeing at the end of a lease. In both cases the value is not the picture. It is that the picture can be tied to a date, a building and a specific location on it, and that it was taken by somebody with no financial interest in what it shows.
Drone Media Imaging carries out no roofing, repair or maintenance work of any kind. Nothing found on your building generates work for us, which is not true of everyone offering to photograph it, and it is the reason a third party can accept the imagery at face value.
And the boundary, stated plainly
This is visual inspection. It records what can be seen, and no photograph sees beneath a covering, into a cavity or through a ceiling. It is not a building survey, not a structural assessment and not a professional opinion on the state of the building, and no surveying qualification is held or claimed. Anything the imagery raises is reported as an observation warranting further investigation by a suitably qualified contractor. A good record does not replace that judgement. It puts the person making it in front of the evidence.
Scope and Standards

- Flight operations are conducted under a Civil Aviation Authority Operational Authorisation, with a General VLOS Certificate (GVC) and an A2 Certificate of Competency, and are fully insured for commercial operation.
- Drone Media Imaging carries out no roofing, repair or maintenance work of any kind, and has no commercial interest in what an inspection does or does not find.

Thermal Fire Monitoring Following a Grain Store Terminal Explosion
Grain Store Explosion and Year-Long Fire – July 5, 2020 – Tilbury Port, London On July 5, 2020, a series of events (possibly by a spark) triggered a large dust explosion and a subsequent fire at the Grain Store Terminal at the Port of Tilbury in London. This was a serious event that required the attention of a large-scale emergency response to get the subsequent grain fire under control and avoid additional explosions. No one was seriously hurt, which is nothing short of a miracle given the number of people on the scene and the amount of reinforced concrete and debris thrown high into the sky before raining down on the surrounding buildings.
Traditional firefighting methods and techniques are ineffective in the case of grain storage fires. Using water to extinguish the inferno is ineffective with grain and dust fires, and the added weight might have caused a catastrophic structural collapse, exacerbating an already challenging situation. As a result, London fire teams were on the scene for days while a proper fire strategy and plan was developed and implemented, with staff always remaining on-site to monitor the situation over the following weeks.
Throughout this early period, there was always the possibility of more explosions and the fire spreading since the grain stored in the linked silos generates dust that may ignite if the temperature is high enough. Drone Media Imaging was contracted to fly thermal imaging flights to collect temperature data to estimate fire spread and track fire management efforts over time. For instance, were the temperatures rising, falling, or remaining constant?
We began operations on July 7, 2020, flying three flights each day, seven days a week initially, to compare temperatures and report back to crisis management teams and emergency service gold commanders. We eventually completed our thermal imaging missions one year and a month after the initial Grain Store explosion in late August 2021! While not all of the silos were full with grain, many were, and several were burning at temperatures far beyond 800°C. Before the fire could be quenched, the building had to be entirely demolished. Temperatures more than 80°C were still being recorded in the grain that remained on the ground after demolition 13 months later.
Gaining safe access to the terminal to fly was not without difficulty, as emergency services had imposed a 50m exclusion zone surrounding the terminal due to the possibility of additional explosions. As a result, our risk assessments and method statements had to be developed specifically for this circumstance and rigorously tested to assure both safe drone flights and the most accurate thermal data gathering at this vital juncture.
We continued to provide the Port of Tilbury London and the accompanying emergency services with daily and weekly calibrated temperature measurements that documented the progress of the grain store fire over 13 months. As thermal infrared aerial specialists, we provided data in the form of detailed reports, thermal imaging, RGB photographic and video footage.
